STANDARDS IN EVERYDAY LIFE

By Guy Merlin Nuefelie

1.INTRODUCTION:

A building Standard, or building Code, is a set of rules that specify and clarify the minimum acceptable level of safety for bothbuildings and non nonbuilding structures. The main goal of the building standard is to make sure that public health is protected, safety and general welfare as they relate to the construction and occupancy of buildings and structures.
Building codes are generally supposed to be applied by engineers and architects .however it’s important to point out that there are some exception to this rule ,in the UK for example, Building Control Surveyors act as verifiers both in the public and private sector , but are also used for various purposes by safety inspectors, environmental scientists, real estate developers, contractors and subcontractors, manufacturers of building products and materials, insurance companies, facility managers, and others.
It’s possible in the same building code additional codes or sections that have more specific requirements that apply for example to dwellings and other special construction objects such as: canopies, signs, pedestrian walkways, parking lots, and radio .

2.Model Building Standard

In countries (like the USA, Canada and almost all the EU countries) where regulation of building construction is a responsibility of the local authorities , the Model Building Codes has been applied with success since the 19th century. Two factors are responsible of model building codes popularity:
- the developing of proprietary building codes is prohibitively expensive
- the capability of the model codes to accommodate local conditions
Model building codes are developed by standards organization s through a network of development committees with representatives from the various affected entities, both government and private. The model code developers are generally funded by the sales of the model codes, the reprint royalties, and the consulting services they may offer to the adopting authorities and code users.
